I am thankful...I am thankful....I am thankful.
Today was one of those days that I struggled to find something to be thankful about. During the course of my day, I had my toe smashed by a chair (with a student in it), had to write a student up at the end of the day, and my meeting at the middle school started 20 minutes late. But despite all of that, I am thankful for my little pickles and the smile that they put on my face throughout most of the day!!!!
23 more days, folks. We can do it! Nothing planned for this weekend...EOG's are next week so i'm planning to relax, maybe find a few sun rays to catch :)

Addicted...
Twenty four days of school left, folks. Twenty four. I can smell summer in the air! Since the kids have come back from spring break, they have been angels. I'm not sure what changed in them, but I haven't come home in tears a single night or wanting to rip my hair out. That's not to say that they're perfect, but who is? I love my little pickles and I can't believe my first six months year of teaching is almost over! It's definitely been a roller coaster, but I'm more than thankful to have a job (and hopefully one next year).
EOG review has been going well...I wasn't so confident in teaching reading when we started three weeks ago, but as we enter our last week before EOG on Monday, I'm feeling pretty good about what I've been doing! I've been able to make it as fun as possible without letting them know they were learning. Thanks to this little website, I've been able to find lots of comprehension games for the babies to play.
I'll admit it. I've become addicted to blogs. I've spent A LOT of my free time (while boyfriend is working or in his office on the computer) just surfing the internet to find interesting blogs to read. It's inspired me to start using mine more as a space to get my feelings and ideas out there. So, as of today, my vow is to start blogging more!
We're headed west in a little while to spend some time with boyfriend's mom. We'll come back home tomorrow to spend time with my mommy! After racking my brain for weeks about what to get her, a lightbulb went off in my head last week...and finally today, sissy and I went to get her present! I love spending time with sissy and I love Mother's day. lovelovelove.
Toodles!

It's been a while...
WOW! What a crazy first 4 months of the year. I've been so so so busy with teaching and everything around here that I don't have time for much else anymore. Nothing overly exciting has happened around here...Zach and I are enjoying living together and having our own little family of 4 with our fur babies. No plans for anything else soon! :)
Spring break is this week, and we're headed to the beach in a few hours. I would have been down there sooner, but being a first year teacher I have no time to take off...so I had to work Monday and Tuesday. No biggie. I got my classroom organized and ready for the last leg of school, and i'm excited! Hopefully I will be able to start from scratch in August next year--I'm excited about all of the possibilities of having my own class for an entire year! I just have to keep my fingers crossed that there will be enough money in the budget for me to keep my job. I'll tell you, it's scary not knowing whether or not you'll have a job next year. I have to start paying off my student loans right after school lets out for the summer and it's tough because I won't have a paycheck coming in until at least August. I just know that I have to be optimistic and keep my head up. I love where I work, I love my job, and I hope to be back next year.
On Saturday, North Carolina had the worst weather it has seen since 1984. We knew that it was going to be pretty bad and that there was a threat of a tornado, but we've never seriously seen one so I didn't think it was that big of a threat. We took my car to the dealership to get two new tires and an alignment Saturday morning. They were supposed to call when it was ready, so we just came home and relaxed. Our cable is messed up, so we don't get a very good signal sometimes, but we were keeping up with the weather on my blackberry and Zach's iPad as we went about our day. By 2:45 Saturday afternoon, the sky looked like it was about to fall. We hunkered down in the bathroom for about an hour while the worst of the storm passed here in Cary, and we were lucky enough to only get some flying debris and really heavy rain. Throughout the day, there were 62 tornadoes spawned in North Carolina, causing many deaths and tons of destruction. One hit right in the middle of downtown Raleigh, about 15 minutes away from our house! Many prayers and thoughts go out to those who were devastated by the weather on Saturday. A state of emergency was declared in NC, and many counties are now receiving federal assistance to help clean up after the disaster.
I had my first eye appointment since I don't remember when yesterday. I've been having trouble focusing on things after reading or watching the computer, so I wanted to go get it checked out. Turns out, I'm farsighted. My muscles have to work extra hard to focus on something when it's close up, so when I glance up at something farther away, my eyes don't want to relax as fast as they should. The solution? Reading glasses. I've never had glasses a day in my life, but now i'll have to deal with them forever. But hey, it could be worse, right? I could be blind! I feel blessed knowing that it's minor and not major.
I've also got my first dermatologist appointment this afternoon... I've had a funky patch of dry skin on my left hand since December. It started out as what I thought was a bug bite, and now has turned into a huge patch that almost takes up the entire back of my hand. I put anti-fungal cream on it because that's what the pharmacist at Target thought it was, but when I went in for my physical on Monday (I've been to see all of my doctors this week), the doctor said it looked like eczema. It itches like crazy and turns really red sometimes and then some days (like today, of course) it's fine. Just really dry. Let's pray that it's nothing more major than a fungus or eczema!
I have to go finish packing and putting clean clothes in the dryer before I head off for my appointment...and soon after that we're island bound! Toodles :)

Valentines and a tough week...
...And what a tough week it was. I knew going into this past week that it was going to be a long one, but I wasn't aware HOW long and hard it was going to be.
Monday was Valentine's day. I had by far the best Valentine's day I have EVER had. Boyfriend dropped no hints, gave no clues, or did anything to give me any idea whatsoever what we were doing Monday night. I left for work thinking that maybe we were just going out to dinner. The kids and I had a pretty normal day, and I let them pass out their Valentines after lunch. We had some snacks, and had planned to head outside for recess--it was a GORGEOUS day outside. All of a sudden, I get a call from the office. "Ms. Brown, you have something in the office". I sent a child up to get it, since I couldn't leave them alone. I watched as the boy came back carrying a very large and gorgeous bouquet of flowers from none other than my love!! :) It was such a beautiful surprise. Of course, I thought that was the end of the surprises. Boy, was I wrong. Zach told me to be home at 6, hungry and ready to get dressed up to go out. So naturally, I think we're going somewhere nice for dinner.
I got home right on time and redid my hair and makeup. I noticed that Zach had vacuumed and made up the bed, which I thought was very sweet. I wasn't sure what he wanted me to wear, so I just put my sweatpants on and waited for him. Turns out he was running late, and he got home around 7. He said I wasn't allowed to come out of the bedroom, and neither were the animals. I waited for him and listened closely...I hear him clanging something around, and he came in and out of the door a bunch of times. I still had NO clue what he was doing. When he was finished, he lead me out into the dining room where I found the kitchen table covered with a new tablecloth, new dishes and silverware, and a single candle surrounded by rose petals. Turns out, he had planned to cook an entire 5 course meal for the two of us. We had bacon wrapped scallops for an appetizer, potato and ham soup, a salad, and Fillet Mignon and lobster tail with asparagus for the main course. We even made chocolate covered strawberries for dessert! It took about 3 hours to cook and eat it all (with a break in the middle for him to take me to the bedroom and discover the box of Godiva chocolates sitting on my pillow), and we were stuffed by the time we got to dessert. I sat down in the living room to let my food settle, and all of a sudden Zach comes out wearing the same exact outfit he was wearing the night we met. Turns out he had wanted us to get dressed up to eat, but because we were running so late we didn't have time. He told me that was the last surprise, so we took our strawberries in the bedroom and decided to call it a night.
I made a comment that it was the "perfect ending to a perfect night"...and Zach paused for a moment and said "well, maybe not". He went to the hall closet and pulled out a box. It was a Tiffany's box!! I opened it up and found the most beautiful pink sapphire necklace. It was the BEST ending to the BEST Valentines day ever. Even though we didn't get to bed until after 11, it was worth every moment I got to spend with my wonderful boyfriend.
Wow, that took a lot of time to write. My week at work was a very different story--and I'll update later about that. Time to go help bring groceries in! Toodles :)

Hip Hip Hooray!
It's been a year full of exciting news! I won't bore you for long...just a quick update.
First off, I got a call at the end of January from the teacher that I student taught under last year...she wanted to see if it was okay with me if she mentioned my name to the principal because they had a 5th grade position coming open. Due to budget problems, she didn't think that they had the money to hire a teacher but she thought maybe I could do some long term subbing. Of course I said yes, because any permanent teaching opportunity was a step up from the on-call subbing that I was doing! It just so happened that I had also accepted a management position with a tutoring company in Durham that same day. That night, I went to bed a very happy girl. I thought that I would be subbing and then tutoring as well. Turns out, things don't always go the way that you plan them to. God had a different plan for me.
The following Wednesday, I got a call from the principal. She asked me if I would be interested in the job, and she told me that she was going to recommend me to the board in Alamance County--as a certified teacher! As long as UNCG had applied for license, I could take over the job full time as a teacher with a temporary contract. As you can imagine, I was over the moon. I talked to her a few more times just to confirm with her, and she asked that I start in a subbing position on the following Monday until the recommendation could go through and I could become official. SO, long story short, I've been a fifth grade teacher for two weeks now and I'm absolutely loving it. I had to turn down the job with the tutoring company because the demand of being a full time teacher is much more than just simply substitute teaching. The kids are having a little bit of a tough time adjusting, but we're beginning to bring things together beautifully. :)
The second piece of news--well, actually. I can't say anything. But I'll let the cat out of the bag as soon as I can! I'm really excited about this one, too.
I'm excited to spend my first Valentine's day with Zach tomorrow. He's got something planned and I have no clue what it is. It's going to be a long day, trying to teach while being so excited about our date! I love Valentine's day.
Lots to be excited about and thankful for, lots of blessings in my life in just 2 months! Here's to making 2011 the best yet.

Goodbye, 2010. Hello 2011!
Happy New Year! I feel like it's time for my monthly update from December.
The last time I posted, I was a day away from graduating college. That was almost 4 weeks ago. It's hard to believe I've been a real adult for almost a month now...it hasn't really kicked in. Getting to Greensboro for the ceremony was a bear; it snowed and iced the entire morning and into the early afternoon! Luckily they didn't cancel it, and my entire family was there to celebrate with me. Nan even came to wish me well. It's good to know I have so many people supporting me! Afterward, I went out to lunch with my dad and his girlfriend, my aunt and uncle, grandparents, and Zach and his mom. :)
The week of Christmas, tragedy struck our family when we lost my cousin, Tiffany. She was only 23 and battled many problems throughout her lifetime--She passed away peacefully in her sleep. It was a hard time for all of us, but we feel better knowing that she's in a better place now with no pain.
That week, I also got to meet Zach's dad for the first time because he came down to trade cars with Zach's brother, Josh. We were just getting home from having lunch with my family after the funeral when he arrived in town, so we went out with him and had dessert while he had dinner. It was very nice to meet him :)
Christmas passed in a blurr--the night before Christmas Eve (Christmas Eve Eve, as we refer to it in my family), I went on a sushi date with Zach and my sister, and then we went to Lauren and Michael's to look at Christmas lights and play games. It's a cousin's tradition that we started last year. I love being able to spend time with my family now that we're all grown up. Christmas Eve, I woke up and finished wrapping my Christmas presents while Zach was at work, and then met him for lunch at Five Guys. This was the only time that we got to spend together on Christmas Eve, because he had to work and then went straight to his mom's to celebrate with her. I went to my mom's for the night, where we rested for a little while before getting ready for the night. We headed out to Lois and Randy's for their annual Christmas party while everyone was at church, and then came back to mom's to open presents. I spent the night there, and of course Summer and I wore our annual matching Christmas PJ's. :) The next morning we woke up, my aunt and uncle came back and we had breakfast, and we relaxed for the rest of the morning. Summer, Zach and I headed over to my grandparent's house where we had lunch and opened presents. After we made a pit stop back at mom's house, we went BACK to Lauren and Michael's to hang out with them and Tyler and Andrew. We played lots of games, and watched the weather as the first white Christmas of our lives began to form. Almost an inch accumulated before we even got home that night! It was beautiful.
The next day we woke up to a winter wonderland--almost 7 inches in Cary! A wonderful snow day also kicked off our week of vacation from work (I had 2 weeks off since Durham Public Schools were closed but Zach only got one week off). We stayed in our sweats all week and didn't do anything productive at ALL. It was GLORIOUS.
To end the week, we celebrated New Years Eve at Lauren and Michael's house. It was a nice, low-key evening filled with games and snacks. We rang in the New Year with champagne and then headed home for the evening.
I started back to work this week, and was blessed to pick up a 4-day job at Creekside for a third grade classroom without a teacher. I'm going back tomorrow, because I've been told that the teacher they have hired is bogged down in paperwork. I'm praying that this is the step that I need to get my foot in the door and hopefully get a job one day soon! I've had some difficulty with one of the students, but it's only making my experience that much more enjoyable....I just want a job!!!!
I'm going to go watch the last 2 minutes of the Duke game...it's a nail biter! :)

December already?
Since when is it the MIDDLE of December? I'm almost positive that yesterday was like...July. Okay, maybe not. But it doesn't seem like I should be graduating college tomorrow. And Christmas surely isn't next weekend...is it?!
November started off with a trip to Davie Co to see friends and Zach's mom the first weekend of the month. We froze our butts off at a bonfire on Saturday night--but we were in good company so the weather didn't bother us much. If I had known then that it was going to be as cold as it is now, I wouldn't have been complaining about the weather then! It's always nice to see good friends, and I got to see Katy one more time before she had her baby. We stayed with Zach's mom that night and the next day we went to their family reunion. I got to meet some of his distant family. :)
My weeks were filled with homework and substitute teaching, writing papers and preparing for finals. I stay in Cary most nights, but come home on Tuesday nights to get my weekly dose of my family and kitty. I'm moving in with Zach for good in a few weeks, and I can't wait to have kitty living with me full time again...it's like losing custody of your kid, except not really. He's just been living with grandma for a little while.
Speaking of school and finals--I'M FINISHED! I finished up classes (and three of my finals) in the first week of December, and finished my last two online finals last weekend. Four of my five grades are in, and they're all A's! I'm just waiting on one more--guaranteed to be no less than a B. Looks like I'm going to make Dean's List again and graduate with a 3.35 GPA. Not quite cum laude, but it'll do just fine. Now instead of spending my weeknights reading for school or working on papers, I spend my nights reading or doing whatever I want to...it's been really weird adjusting to all this free time, but I'm not complaining. I love being able to read for fun again. It's also made me want to work more often. While I was in school, I didn't really want to work on my days off because I was so swamped with schoolwork and other things...and with my job, I'm not on a certain schedule, I determine when I work and when I don't. But in the last two weeks when I haven't had class, I've wanted to work almost every day. I don't have anything else to do while everyone is at work, so why not?! I did treat myself to a day off today, and since graduation is tomorrow (just about 25 hours from now...), I'm officially on what I guess you could call "Christmas vacation" from work.
To attempt to recover from the crazy couple of months Zach and I have had, we decided to make November a very low key month--we're trying to concentrate on saving money and getting out of debt; we recognize that money is the #1 thing couples argue about and we're fighting against that. We haven't been going out to dinner at all unless we're out already or it's a special night. We're not spending frivolously, and we're watching our finances very carefully. I had to spend a TON of money on gas driving back and forth to Greensboro twice a week, but now that i'm finished with school, my weekly finances have dropped significantly. Not having a lot of money to work with has definitely helped me to reduce my budget every week--I could only work so much while I was in school! I'm so glad that we're focusing on fighting against the negative things that many people in relationships come across; we're planning to live happily ever after, regardless of what statistics say.
Since we're trying to save money, we've decided that (hopefully) every month we'll have one date night. Last month, we went to PF Changs and then to see the new Harry Potter movie. We haven't gone out for December yet, but because of all the excitement of graduation and Christmas getting ready to roll around, we might not make it out. It's wonderful to lay around the house and be lazy all day, but it's also nice to put on "real pants" and go out sometimes, too. I'm not one of those girls who has to be taken out on the town constantly to realize how much i'm loved. I love staying in and cooking dinner together most nights, although since we've both been under the weather off and on the last few weeks, we haven't been doing anything extravagant. In fact, we had soup twice last week. And that's perfectly okay with me. My relationship is not perfect--but it's perfect for me.
Thanksgiving brought many, many things to be thankful for. A wonderful set of family and friends, an amazing and loving boyfriend, almost a college degree, and lots of other things (i'm too lazy to sit here and list them all). The last 5 months have definitely been some of the greatest times of my life; I wouldn't change any of it for the world. I'm looking forward to Christmas, moving, and the new year--2011 is going to start off a whole new world of things for me; no school, a new home, hopefully a *real* job at some point, and finally being done with everything from my past and beginning to focus on the future. I think i'll go drink my coffee and think about just how wonderful life really is right now :)
